FAQ

General

What are the benefits of using concrete pavers?

Concrete paving blocks add flexibility to your landscaping projects. They arrive ready to install in almost any weather. There's no need for concrete mortar or setting time, thereby reducing construction time.

Also, a paving surface has numerous joints, allowing paving units to make micro-adjustments to freeze/defrost cycles and heavy loads on the surface, thus preventing cracking, a common problem in traditional paving.

Repairing underground infrastructures or a damaged foundation is a breeze. Simply remove and re-install the same pavers in the affected area?no material waste, no extra expenses, no need for a percussion drill.

Numerous shapes, colors, textures, and styles make your space as beautiful as it is functional.

Concrete paver manufacturing is an environmentally friendly process that uses natural aggregate in a cementitious base with no petroleum products.

Go back to questions

What can I do if one of the pavers is damaged?

If a paver is damaged for any reason, you can easily replace it or simply turn it over, as some pavers have the same finish on both sides. Keep leftover pavers as replacements, in case the need arises.

To replace a paver, simply remove the sand around it, lift it out using a flathead screwdriver, replace it, and fill in the joints with the proper kind of sand.

Go back to questions

What criteria should I use when selecting pavers?

For low-load areas (low risk of heavy loads or soil instability), the choice of paver model and style is strictly esthetic, as the intrinsic interlocking property of the pavers holds everything in place. Pavers 60 mm thick are recommended.

What is efflorescence?

Efflorescence is a natural phenomenon caused by the formation of an off-white calcite on the surface of concrete products made with cement. One in the inherent components of cement is construction lime. During the concrete manufacturing process that consists of mixing cement, water, sand, coarse aggregate and chemical auxiliaries, a series of chemical reactions occur and result in the formation of a solid material: concrete. Construction lime is released during these reactions and migrates through a micro porous network towards the surface of the concrete when it is wet. This lime, once in contact with the carbonic gas present in the air, is transformed into calcite. This phenomenon is efflorescence.

The efflorescence will disappear on its own after two or three years of exposure to weather stress but it is possible to eliminate it more rapidly by cleaning the concrete product with the appropriate detergents.

Installation

How do I fill the block or slab joints?

To fill the joints between pavers or slabs, follow these steps:

  • Spread concrete sand over the paved surface. We suggest you use Techni-Seal Polymeric Sand or any other type of sand of 1.18 mm maximum dimension*
  • This step is optional for slabs .
Use a broom to sweep the dry sand into the joints, spreading the sand over the entire surface, in every direction.
  • This next step applies only to pavers.
Remove excess sand. Work the sand into the joints by making several passes with a vibrating plate. Make sure all joints are completely filled.

* Polymeric sand stays firmly in place following application, greatly reducing weed or ant infestation. It resists erosion (water, frost, wind, suction, and more) and stabilizes the structure.

For more information on filling the joints, see our installation guide.

What are the steps to installing paving blocks or slabs?

Follow these steps when installing concrete pavers:

  • Excavate and prepare the infrastructure
  • Lay a geotextile membrane (optional)
  • Lay the granular material subfoundation and foundation (according to site specifications)
  • Construct borders
  • Spread sand base
  • Install pavers
  • Thoroughly fill all joints with concrete sand

For more information on installing concrete pavers and slabs, see our installation guide.

Go back to questions

What is a sand base and how is it properly made?

To properly make a sand base, follow these steps:

  • Spread a layer of concrete sand or stone dust no more than 15 mm (5/8") to 25 mm (1") thick
  • Level the concrete sand or stone dust using a straight plank and two previously placed pipes no more than 25 mm (1") in diameter

For more information on making a sand base, see our installation guide.

Moreover, certain categories of very unstable ground or ground severely affected by freeze-thaw cycles may require deeper excavation and a thicker base course. Maintenance

How can I remove grease or oil stains from the pavers?

To remove grease or oil stains from the paved surface, use an appropriate detergent. Techi-Seal's Dirt and Grease Cleaner is the most effective product to remove grease, motor oil, or other greasy stains from the pavement. It dissolves, dislodges, and encapsulates grease, thoroughly cleaning the surface without leaving an oily film after rinsing. It is recommended for sealed or bare paved surfaces.

Go back to questions

How can I remove paint, tar, or rubber from the pavers?

To remove paint, tar, and rubber stains from the concrete surface, use an appropriate product. Techni-Seal's Paint, Tar, and Rubber Remover is the most effective product for dissolving sealant, paint, tar, rubber, or chewing gum from concrete paved surfaces. It evaporates slowly, making it easier to strip large areas, and its emulsifiers facilitate rinsing.

Go back to questions

How can I remove rust stains from the pavers?

To remove rust stains from the paved surface, use an appropriate rust remover. Techni-Seal's Rust Remover is the most effective product for removing rust from paved surfaces. It effectively dissolves rust stains caused by dripping rusty water, steel streaks, fertilizer granules, etc., without discoloring the concrete.

Go back to questions

How long should I wait before cleaning and sealing the paved surface?

Before cleaning and sealing a newly paved surface, we recommend that you let the efflorescence rise to the surface of the concrete.

As well, wait until the first coat of sealant is visibly worn through before applying a new coat (minimum of two years), as excessive buildup may make the surface slippery.

Go back to questions

What can I do about efflorescence?

You can eliminate efflorescence by cleaning the concrete with the appropriate detergent. Techni-Seal's efflorescence cleaner is the best product for dissolving efflorescence and removing ground-in dirt. It enhances the color and ensures even cleaning; plus, it allows the sealant to better penetrate and adhere to the surface. If any efflorescence remains on the surface, repeat cleaning.

Go back to questions

What products should I use to maintain my concrete pavers surface?

For best results, we recommend using only products especially formulated for pavers. Hydrochloric acid is not recommended as it can discolor pavers. Also, do not use gasoline or varsol to clean oil stains. These products only dissolve the oil, allowing it to penetrate the paved surface and making removal even more difficult.

To clean concrete pavers, we recommend using high quality Techni-Seal products when installing and maintaining concrete pavers. Techni-Seal offers a wide range of highly effective sealers, cleaners, polymeric sand, adhesives, and more to beautify and protect residential concrete surfaces.

Go back to questions

What should I do before applying a sealer?

Before applying a sealer, it is very important to clean the paved surface. First, remove all visible stains (oil, rust, tire tracks, tar, paint, rubber, etc.). Next, carefully dissolve the efflorescence and remove ground-in dirt from the entire surface using an efflorescence cleaner for pavers.

Go back to questions

Why should I apply a protective sealant on the paved surface?

A specially designed protective sealant penetrates deeply for maximum effectiveness and durability. It protects against oil and dirt and makes cleaning easier. It resists the elements (freeze/thaw cycles, sun, rain, etc.), petroleum products, calcium, and salt. Applying a sealer enhances the concrete's original color and gives it a satin finish. Never apply a seaIer to dirty, wet, or efflorescent surfaces.

We recommend using a protective sealant from Techni-Seal's line of paver maintenance products.
